Franz Kafka

At four years old, Franz Kafka was punished by being locked on the balcony at night. He says this episode was so traumatizing, it influenced his writing to the point that the characters in all of his short stories and novels deal with alienation to extreme levels. Random fact #2, he worked for an insurance company and invented the hard hat.
